The fishing harbour is expected to reinstate its presence as a local and national attraction, by the year of 2020.

The Liopetri Fishing Harbour is located in a small village called Liopetri, at the shore of south eastern Cyprus, between the towns of Larnaca and Ayia Napa. This lovely little fishing harbour is characterized by the traditional fishing boats on the river and it measures 42 hectares. The diverse geological surroundings and the ragged Mediterranean flora of the area form an undoubtedly unique landscape. Located only a few minutes away of the world known buzzling resort of Ayia Napa, the relaxing surroundings are perfect for a lazy day, while the two fish restaurants by the water’s edge dish out the fresh catch of the day.

Time has not been kind to the fishing harbour of Potamos Liopetriou, however, it still reserves its charm and remains a well-known place to visit. Redevelopment plans are in place aiming at the transformation of the old river harbour to a more appealing harbour that will not only serve its current users, but also increase the number of visitors. The fishing harbour is expected to reinstate its presence as a local and national attraction, by the year of 2020.

The redevelopment plans include new shipyard and platforms, a fishing training centre, a boat repairing site, a multifunctional area including a conference centre, restaurants, a children’s playground and a river bridge. The creation of a national environmental park will offer bicycle and pedestrian paths, a bicycle renting facility as well as gardens with shelters for visitors offering a comprehensive experience surrounded by pure nature. Information signs will also be placed to inform visitors about the numerous different types of birds visiting the area. In addition, two big car parks will be available on site able to host over 100 cars.

The main importance is to avoid any damage to the surrounding natural environment such as the nearby forest and EU Natura2000 protection zone.

The community leader of Liopetri, Mr. Kyriakos Trisokkas, claimed that, “It has been the long wish of the people of Liopetri, to see Potamos being refurbished. We have beautiful childhood memories from the area, and we do not want to see it perish”.
